Phonics at Napier

The Academy has adopted the Read Write Inc. phonics programme of study to teach our children the fundamental skills in learning to read. We recognise that the skill of reading is one of the most important skills your child will learn to do, this is why we put in as much energy as possible to support our pupils in acquiring the necessary skills to become confident readers.

We begin teaching phonics to our pupils when they are in the Nursery and Reception year. This means that the children learn to 'read' the sounds in words and how they are written down. The children also practise to read the 'tricky words', such as said, was and once. By the end of year 2, your child should be able to read aloud books that are at the right level for his/her age.

All teachers and TA's in KS1 and year 3 have been trained to deliver the Read Write Inc. curriculum. Our Senior teachers and Phonics Lead regularly observe the delivery of lessons to ensure best practice is shared and that the children are learning how we want them to learn.

Over the course of the year you will be invited into school to take part in a phonic workshop. This is a great opportunity to find out more information about helping your children to read at home. Please check the school calendar to confirm dates and time.

You can help your child to sound out the letters in words and then to ‘push’ the sounds together to make a whole word. Try not to refer to the letters by their names. Help your child to focus on the sounds, there are also many fantastic resources for parents here that will support you in helping your child.
