Year 1 is a key transitional time in a child’s learning journey and we see the time that our children spend in Year 1 as hugely important. It is a time when children move on from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and begin their experience of the primary school National Curriculum. Some children are more than ready for this transition whilst others need a little more reassurance. Our aim is for our Year 1 children to become confident and independent learners. They will be embracing new challenges - personally, socially and emotionally, as well as academically - and it is important that we support and scaffold children’s learning as they ‘get to grips’ with these new challenges.
We undertake our learning with a Creative topic based approach. It provides opportunities for children to learn and respond in a variety of ways. Keeping topics flexible we are able to follow children’s interests and needs. Children learn best by doing, and a Creative topic approach incorporates all of the curriculum areas, English, Maths, Science, Computing, Geography, History and Art & DT. It gives the opportunity for children to be both active and creative explorers who are not afraid to try out their ideas and to think their own thoughts. Our goal is to help children become enthusiastic learners who become independent, self-confident and inquisitive.
