History

History
We aim to help children develop a sense of identity and an understanding of their world through knowledge about the development of the world and through understanding and interpreting the past.

Through the use of interesting resources and investigation: artefacts, oral history, including their own family history, pictures, photographs, books and the internet, children will gain an understanding of chronology.

Using links with other curriculum areas such as language, music and art and design, children will be encouraged to build up their historical knowledge and awareness.

Geography

Geography
We aim to provide opportunities for children to study the environment, both local and global including the physical and human forces which influence it. Topics and themes will be used to develop geographical skills such as observation and comparison of climates and landscapes, interpretation of maps, atlases and globes and problem solving to propose solutions to geographical questions.

The school grounds and the local environment provide rich and diverse opportunities for the teaching of geography.

Art

Art
We aim to provide opportunities for children to develop skills and creativity in using a range of media and techniques to express their ideas and feelings. Children are encouraged to record through drawing, painting and modelling and be able to
articulate opinions about their own and others’ work.

A ‘gallery’ of children’s work and displays around the school are regularly kept up-dated. Visiting artists are used to provide motivation and stimulation to the children. The school prides itself on the excellent quality of art work produced by the children.

Through the use of different materials, such as wood, card and plastics, and also by using knowledge gained in other subjects e.g. Maths, Science, Geography & History, children are encouraged to design artefacts. ICT is also encouraged in order to design specific projects which relate to the children’s learning.

Music

Music
We aim to inspire the children with a love for and enjoyment of different types of music. Opportunities to develop musical talents, skills, expression and creativity will be provided. This will be through listening to a selection of extracts in assemblies, singing practice, improv- isation using rhythm and melody and school performances.

The Kent Music School provides tuition for certain instruments. If you would like your child to learn to play an orchestral instrument then please ask us. In addition, the school does have a choir which practices regularly.

Design Technology

Design & Technology offers opportunities for children to combine designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding to create high quality products. Using a range of materials and components, tools and processes, as well as skills from other subjects such as Art, ICT and Science your child will experience a complete design, make and evaluate process; whilst at the same time developing an understanding of product manufacture and their contribution to our society.

Physical Education

We aim to ensure that children enjoy physical activity and appreciate the connection with healthy life-styles. We encourage children to understand the need for safety and develop positive attitudes to sport, including the ability to cope with success and failure. The lessons include games, gymnastics, athletics and dance in which skills such as coordination and teamwork are emphasised.

The children will also receive swimming tuition with a qualified instructor at different stages of their school career.
Children in Key Stage 2 are given the opportunity to take part in an outdoor adventure activity.

Information and Communication Technology

Information and Communication Technology
We aim to provide opportunities for every child to use ICT for the purposes of study, investigation and recording and for communication. The school has a computer suite as well as networked computers in classrooms. Children are encouraged to develop their skills of selecting, manipulating and presenting information for specific purposes. They are also encouraged to use ICT to develop their language and communication skills and support their learning in other areas.

As well as learning computer skills, children are taught to use other equipment such as scanners and digital cameras. Also, each child and member of staff has an E-Mail address and access to the Internet.
