The school aims to develop and extend the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening through purposeful use of language using a variety of experiences. Children are encouraged to become independent readers in order to access meaning and information from a range of media, and imaginative writers able to write their own fiction, poetry and non-fiction texts.

Parental partnership in the teaching of reading, writing, spelling and research skills is highly valued as it acts as reinforcement of learning at school.

The daily Literacy lesson provides structured teaching of language and literature using whole class, group and individual work.

Special events such as Book Weeks help in  increasing the appreciation of the diversity of literature.

The school has three libraries which hold stimulating non-fiction books on subject themes as well as fiction texts. The libraries are networked and children can locate books by computer.

Maths

Maths
Our aims are to ensure that every child follows a balanced programme of maths appropriate to their age and ability. The work includes using and applying maths concepts in everyday situations, numberwork, shape, space and measure and handling data. Children will be encouraged to learn basic number facts, e.g. times tables and parental help will assist learning greatly.

The daily Numeracy lesson provides structured teaching of maths concepts using mental and oral recall followed by group and whole class teaching using teacher generated and published schemes of work.

Science

Science
We aim to enable children to develop an understanding of the world by using and applying scientific knowledge, skills and ideas as well as developing their natural curiosity about the world.

Our schemes of work allow children to develop an enquiry approach, observation and experimentation and drawing conclusions from results.
Science is taught in groups and whole class sessions. Children in Years 5 and 6 are set by ability.
