It is the duty of the parents to meet their children promptly after a club has finished at 4:30pm. If parents cannot meet their child they should make alternative arrangements for the child to be met and the teacher in charge should be informed by letter or phone call to the office. This way we can make sure that your child is sent home with the appropriate person.
The Chess Club which opened in September meets every morning during the school’s breakfast club and has members of all ages and abilities.
Children at the club earn points for each game they play which are recorded every week in a league table. Every half term Trophies are awarded to the player with the highest scores in each year group.
The chess club entered a national chess tournament and many of the children have qualified for the East Kent Mega finals where they will go on to play other children in the region. Mrs Zerina Slade Headteacher at the school is delighted that so many pupils are taking an interest. She said “I am really pleased that so many children are playing chess, it provides them with such valuable skills such as focussed thought and problem–solving. We have noticed an improvement in their concentration and social skills back in the class room. It also encourages healthy competiton and each child feels proud of their achievement.”
The school is very lucky to have a keen parent–helper who set up the league, ran the tournament and is teaching chess skills to the pupils. He would like to invite other chess playing primary schools to challenge Napier pupils. If you do wish to take up this challenge please ring the school and we can make the arrangements.
For further information please contact Mrs. Zerina Slade.
