Overview

Piece of Year 3 work

Year 3 is a huge jump from Year 2. Children are experiencing life in Key Stage 2, which entails independence and excitement.

The teachers in Year 3 are supportive and friendly, and help the transition to be as smooth as possible. There are high expectations in terms of behaviour and achievement. We have good work certificates, house points; table points, star of the day etc. to encourage good behaviour.

A piece of homework is set every day. Every Monday the children will bring home a set of spellings to learn for the following Monday. On Tuesdays Numeracy homework is set; Wednesdays is Literacy homework, Thursdays is Numeracy and on Friday its Literacy comprehension which is to be completed over the weekend.

All pupils have been given a homework diary and encouraged to copy down their homework task from the board, so they know what they have to do when they get home, and when it is due in.  Pupils also have a contact book and reading book and are encouraged to read regularly at home on a daily basis. We do ask for parents/carers to make a comment in their contact book about their reading progress too.

Children are also able to attend class trips which are linked to the National Curriculum. These trips help to consolidate learning and add fun to the children’s learning.

Curriculum

Curriculum

In Literacy, Year 3 children are exposed to a wide variety of genre, including traditional tales, poetry and non-fiction.

Various teaching styles are adopted to ensure that different learning styles are addressed. The Primary National Strategy is being used as a guideline for planning.

Numeracy involves all aspects of the Primary Numeracy Strategy, which is again being used as a guideline. Children are taught a variety of numerical concepts through games, visual aids and hands on approach where possible. There is additional literacy support given to those children who would benefit from a little extra help. We also have teaching assistants and adult helpers that support children, and hear children read.

Many interesting topics are taught in Science, including How Plants Grow, Healthy Eating and Materials. Other subjects taught are ICT, Art and Design, History & Geography (topic), Design and Technology, RE, PE, Music, French and PSHE. These are taught using unit plans as a basis, ensuring essential coverage of the topic.

Each class has an interactive whiteboard which helps to enhance lessons. All lessons are taught with the idea that learning should be as interesting and stimulating as possible.
