Year 1 Overview

Year 1 Overview Year 1 aims to be a challenging and fun year. It encourages children to build on their experiences in Reception.

This year provides opportunities for children to become independent learners, in many aspects of the school curriculum.  Children are introduced to the Key Stage One curriculum and teachers and other staff provide a good foundation for the continued and extended work they will encounter in Year 2.  Some children are provided with extra supportive sessions which aims to extend their knowledge and understanding within the core subjects.  This is delivered through Gifted and Talented, Basic Skills and Early Literacy support groups, as well as English as an additional Language and Speech and Language Therapy sessions.
Children are continuously provided with a positive learning environment that always encourages children to look for what they can do.  This is echoed with weekly good work assemblies and earning team points for their school team.
Homework is given to pupils every Friday and consists of Spellings and Numeracy.

The Curriculum

The Curriculum In Literacy, children experience a wide variety of genre, from traditional tales, poetry and non-fiction.  This is delivered using various learning styles.

Children play games to develop their phonics and are given many cross-curricular opportunities to consolidate their understanding. We now have Early Literacy Support Groups for children needing extra support in Literacy.

Numeracy covers various aspects of number. Children read and write numbers to 20 and beyond, as well as, sequencing and counting in different steps.  Numbers up to 20 and beyond are added and subtracted.  Children compare different lengths, masses and capacities using both standard and non-standard units.  They look at both 2D and 3D shapes.  A huge amount of language is introduced and consolidated in year one so as much opportunity to use it and hear it is a priority.

Many exciting topics are covered in Science. These are Ourselves, Sorting Materials, Light and Dark, Growing Plants, Pushes and Pulls and Sound and Hearing.  Other subjects taught are ICT, Art and Design, History, Geography. As well as Design and technology, RE, PE, Music and PSHE.

Every Year One class has an interactive whiteboard, which extends their experiences within all subjects. Children love seeing things in action and taking part themselves.
